The Torrent Fountain is a wide, low-set Ceramic water feature in a banded jar form — broad and settled in proportion, with three horizontal ribs encircling the body at measured intervals. The form reads as ancient and functional in equal measure: the kind of vessel that might have stood at the edge of a well, or collected rainwater in a monastery courtyard. The wide, flat-rimmed basin holds a generous volume of water, and from its centre a single column rises and falls back without drama.
The surface carries the complex finish of something that has been exposed to the elements across many seasons. A pale grey-white lime wash forms the base, over which rust-red, ochre, and dark mineral tones have emerged through layers of application and natural degradation. The finish blisters and peels in places, cracks along the horizontal ribs, and gathers in darker deposits in the recesses between bands. Patches of the raw terracotta show through where the wash has worn completely away. It is a surface that tells a story of exposure — to water, to weather, to time — and does so without contrivance.
The three banded ribs that define the form’s structure catch the layered surface finish differently to the flat panels between them. The ribs hold more of the grey wash; the panels below show more of the rust and ochre beneath. This division gives the pot a clear horizontal rhythm and prevents the complex surface from reading as chaotic. The wide, double-rolled rim at the top frames the water basin cleanly, providing a smooth edge that contrasts with the worked body below.
The Torrent Fountain is one of those objects that organises the space around it simply by being placed within it.
