Verdigris Fountain

Verdigris — the blue-green patina that forms naturally on copper and bronze over time; one of the oldest pigments known, and among the most beautiful products of oxidation.

The Verdigris Fountain is a self-contained water feature built from a large, tapered terracotta vessel whose surface has been finished to closely resemble aged, heavily patinated copper or bronze. Deep rust-red and dark brown form the base — the colour of oxidised iron or kiln-fired clay left to weather — over which teal and blue-green pigment has been applied in irregular patches, drips, and deposits. The effect is of a material caught mid-transformation: the teal advancing in some areas, the rust holding in others, the two tones overlapping and bleeding at their edges in the way that natural patination does on old metal exposed to rain.

The texture reinforces the surface reading. The clay body is heavily worked — dimpled, pitted, and varied across the entire surface — so that the layered pigment settles differently across each area, pooling in recesses, sitting thinly on raised points, running in vertical traces where it was applied wet. The result is a surface of considerable density that rewards extended looking. From a few feet away, it reads as a single complex colour. Closer, it resolves into layers and individual marks that make clear it was built up by hand.

The vessel form is simple and resolved: a gently tapered cylinder, wider at the top than at the base, with a thick flat rim that contains the water basin. The pump rises from the centre, delivering a clean vertical column of water that falls back into the basin and recirculates. The sound is constant but not loud — the particular quality of a small upwelling fountain, present without demanding attention.

Water and the verdigris surface exist in natural correspondence here. The teal of the finish and the quality of moving water — its colour, its light — occupy the same tonal register. Placed in a garden bed or on a lawn as photographed, the fountain becomes a still point: the sound locating it before the eye does, the surface holding its own against the surrounding foliage without competing with it.

The Verdigris Fountain is supplied with a submersible pump (as an option) and requires a standard power connection. Installation is straightforward — the vessel is placed, filled, and the pump connected.

Material — Large-format ceramic, layered rust and verdigris pigment finish Finish — Hand-applied oxide and teal patina — each piece individually worked and unique Includes — Submersible recirculating pump Power — Standard electrical connection required Placement — Garden bed, lawn, courtyard, or outdoor space Care — Top up water level as needed. Clean pump filter periodically per manufacturer guidance. The exterior finish will continue to develop and deepen with outdoor exposure.
