Parna (Sanskrit for leaf), The Fern Planter is a hand-carved terracotta pot in which the motif and the material are given equal weight. Across the rounded body, fern fronds are incised directly into the clay — each leaf rendered with fine, precise strokes that follow the natural arc of the frond from stem to tip. The carving is filled with a muted teal, applied by hand into the grooves, so the colour sits recessed within the surface rather than sitting on top of it. The result is restrained: the terracotta reads first, the teal emerges on closer looking.

The form beneath the carving is generous and low — a wide, bowl-like body that sits close to the ground and offers good soil volume for the size. The rim is thick and smooth, a deliberate contrast to the worked surface below it. The base tapers slightly, giving the pot a settled, grounded quality whether placed singly or in a group.

Each pot in the set of three carries the same fern motif scaled to its size — the fronds proportioned to the body so the carving feels neither crowded nor sparse at any scale. Together, the three sizes create a composed grouping. Individually, each holds its own.

The combination of unglazed terracotta and hand-applied teal has a particular quality in direct sunlight — the warm orange of the clay and the cool green of the inlay shift slightly depending on the light and time of day. Photographed here in morning shadow, the two tones are at their most distinct.

Suited to outdoor steps, covered terraces, and interior spaces with strong natural light. Works well with trailing ferns, pothos, or any plant whose foliage echoes the carved motif.
