The Valaya Planter (Sanskrit for ‘ring’ or ‘encircling band’; the continuous loop, something that returns to itself) is a coil-ridged terracotta pot in which the making process is entirely visible. Wide, rounded ribs wrap the body in continuous horizontal bands from base to shoulder — each ridge a full, soft wave of clay, closely spaced, consistent in rhythm. The ribbing is not incised or stamped after forming; it is the form. The pot is built this way, and the ridges carry the slight irregularity of something shaped by hand — no two ribs perfectly identical in width or depth, the surface warm and immediate as a result.

The body is full and bowl-like, wider at the shoulder than at the base, with a generous interior volume suited to large-rooted plants and deep-growing specimens. The natural terracotta is left entirely unfinished — no wash, no pigment, no treatment of any kind. The clay fires to a warm, consistent orange-red that will deepen slightly with watering and develop a quiet patina with outdoor use.

At the rim, a length of thick natural jute rope is laced through punched holes and knotted at regular intervals — the knots sitting on the outside of the rim, the rope running along the inner edge. The detail is functional in origin: the rope reinforces the rim and provides grip. But in combination with the ridged terracotta body, it completes the object — the coarse, fibrous texture of the jute in direct and considered contrast to the smooth, warm clay below.

This is a pot that relies entirely on material and proportion. There is no applied decoration, no colour, no motif. What remains when those things are removed is the quality of the making — and here that quality is sufficient.

Available as a set of three nesting sizes with drain holes at the base.  Can be picked up individually as well.
