The Suvarna Planter

Price range: ₹1,299.00 through ₹2,999.00

A set of three hand-carved terracotta planters in an aged ochre wash, each carrying a single fern frond carved in relief and filled with chalky white. Warm in colour, generous in form — a surface that looks as though it has been slowly arrived at rather than quickly applied.

The Suvarna Planter (anskrit for ‘golden’ or ‘of good colour’; used in classical texts to describe the warm tone of aged gold) is a hand-carved terracotta pot finished in a deep ochre-yellow wash, aged and abraded by hand to reveal the raw clay beneath in places. The base colour sits somewhere between turmeric and burnished gold — warm and matte, with a surface that has been worked rather than simply painted. Where the finish is thinner, the terracotta shows through in soft patches, giving the body a lived-in depth that a uniform colour would not achieve.

Into this surface, a single fern frond is carved in low relief — sweeping diagonally across the body from the lower edge to the upper shoulder in one unbroken arc. The carving is filled with a chalky white, applied into the recessed channels so the motif reads clearly against the golden ground without competing with it. Each leaflet is individually incised, following the natural alternating pattern of a fern frond with botanical precision. The white settles deeper in the wider cuts, giving the carving a subtle tonal variation that rewards close looking.

The form is wide and low, broader than it is tall, with a gently tapered base and a smooth, open rim. The proportions give the pot a grounded, settled quality. The large fern frond, scaled generously to the body, becomes the object’s defining gesture — not a decorative addition but the reason the surface exists.

The ochre ground and white carved motif together recall the wall paintings of old havelis and temple corridors — surfaces worked in earth pigments, faded and beautiful. The Suvarna Planter carries that reference lightly, without literal imitation.

Available in three sizes and can be picked up individually. Comes with a drain hole at the base. The frond motif is scaled consistently to each body, maintaining its visual weight across the set.
