The Rim Rolled planter is presented here in the Nila shade (In Sanskrit, nīla (नील) refers to the colour blue-black or deep blue — most precisely the blue of the indigo plant. In Tamil, nīlam (நீலம்) appears in classical Sangam literature to describe the sky, the sea, and the blue waterlily (nīlotpala)). The Nila shade is a vivid, flat blue — the kind of colour found on the painted walls of coastal towns and old fishing harbours and in an option of natural Terracotta. The tone is direct and unambiguous: neither turquoise nor navy, but a clear, saturated mid-blue that holds its intensity in both shade and direct sun. Against the fine horizontal ribbing of the body, the colour settles into the grooves slightly darker than it sits on the ridges, giving the surface a quiet depth and preventing the finish from reading as flat.
The ribbing itself is fine and closely spaced, applied by hand during forming and running continuously from the base to just below the rim. Where the lines catch the light obliquely — as seen here in morning sun — the surface takes on an almost textile quality, reminiscent of tightly wound rope or woven indigo cloth. This is the pot’s primary texture, and it works in complete contrast to the thick natural rope that finishes the rim.
At the top, a length of heavy twisted jute rope is threaded through a series of punched holes just below the rim and looped at intervals around the outside of the pot. The rope is thick and coarse, left entirely natural and undyed. It sits in strong material contrast to the smooth, painted blue body beneath — rough against smooth, warm against cool, organic against considered. Cut-through handles are formed in the clay just below the rope line, providing functional grip for moving and repositioning.
The Nila Planter is confident in its colour without being decorative. It asks to be placed where it will be seen — at the base of a staircase, along a terrace edge, grouped on a courtyard floor.
